Canada's 2022 Nissan Leaf Price Drops By $6,800

It has always been Nissan's goal to bring electric vehicles to the masses. To further that goal, Nissan Canada announced on August 30th that the 2022 Nissan Leaf's price will be cut by $6,800 on all four trim levels.

Too good to be true? Nope, this is for real. There's no smoke and mirrors, no ulterior motives, no hidden agenda. The manufacturer's suggested retail price – that's the number you see on the sticker – for the 2022 Nissan Leaf SV is now down to $37,498: $6,800 less than the 2021 Leaf SV.

** As of Monday, January 13, 2024, the federal government has suspended the federal iZEV incentive.

But in Prince Edward Island, $37,498 does not tell the whole story. Not at all. PEI's Universal EV Incentive chops another $5,000 off the total cost of the vehicle (and includes a free level 2 home charger). Then the Federal Zero-Emission Vehicle incentive cuts the total cost by another $5,000.

The $6,800 price cut is noteworthy, but here's the even more staggering math. The 2022 Nissan Leaf SV is the second-generation Leaf with 240 kilometres of range and a ridiculous array of standard equipment, yet it now costs $897 less than the 2011 Nissan Leaf (with 33% less range and far fewer features) cost a decade ago. Adjusted for inflation, the 2022 Nissan Leaf actually costs $8,000 less than the 2011 Leaf did even though it charges faster, accelerates more quickly, offers far more range, and includes much more equipment.

That's what we call progress. And it's proof that Nissan is continuing "the tradition of making electric vehicles available to everyone."

The 40 kWh 2022 Nissan Leaf SV with 240 kilometres of range is only one member of the Leaf range. There are three other versions:

  • • the $40,098 2022 Nissan Leaf S Plus with a 62 kWh battery and 363 kilometres of range;
  • • the $43,098 2022 Nissan Leaf SV Plus with a 62 kWh battery and 349 kilometres of range;
  • • and the $46,098 2022 Nissan Leaf SL Plus with a 62 kWh battery and 349 kilometres of range.

Regardless of which Leaf trim level you're looking at, Nissan gets a bit crazy with the feature count. The Leaf S Plus includes Apple CarPlay/Android Auto on an 8-inch screen, proximity access/pushbutton start, forward collision warning, automatic climate control, auto high beams, E-Pedal, heated front and rear seats plus a heated steering wheel, blind spot monitoring, alloy wheels, and a lot more.

The Leaf SV and SV Plus adds ProPILOT Assist (steering assist, intelligent cruise control, etc.), NissanConnect EV services for remote connection to the vehicle, navigation, Around View Monitor, 8-way power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, upgraded audio, and intelligent driver alertness. Moving up to the Leaf SL adds leather seating, Bose audio, seven speakers, and integrated mirror turn signals.

Every 2022 Nissan Leaf also includes a long-term limited lithium-ion battery warranty, which not only covers "defects in materials or workmanship" but also battery capacity loss ("below nine bars of capacity as shown on the vehicle's battery capacity level gauge".) That warranty is for eight years or 160,000 kilometres.
